The Danger of Mind-Reading

Image
Have you ever found yourself jumping to conclusions, assuming the worst about a situation or someone's intentions, without concrete evidence? I certainly have and let me tell you a personal story about how my mind-reading tendencies got the best of me in a past relationship. Every morning, my friend and I had a ritual of exchanging "good morning" messages. But one day, when I didn't receive his usual message, my mind immediately jumped to negative conclusions. I assumed he was upset with me, cheating on me, or even worse, no longer interested in our relationship. This led to unnecessary anxiety and conflict between us. You see, cognitive distortions are sneaky thought patterns that can distort our perception of reality and negatively impact our emotions and behaviors. They're like tricksters that play with our minds, making us see things in a distorted way. And I realized that I was engaging in mind-reading, one of the common cognitive distortions that can wreak h...

Authenticity as it relates to Stress Awareness

Image
Hello and welcome to my blog post on Stress Awareness!  As I look back on my eventful week, which included an exciting voice coaching class that left me feeling empowered in my abilities, I can't help but think about the importance of self-care and managing stress. With stress awareness in the spotlight, I've been actively keeping an eye on my stress levels and reflecting on how stress impacts our lives. So, dear readers, have you been prioritizing your stress management too? Let's explore this essential topic together and discover effective ways to keep stress in check for a healthy and balanced lifestyle. During a conversation with my mentor about my milestones for the week, he asked me a profound question:                  "How are you managing your stress level s ? "     My response was casual as I mentioned that I was stressed. However, my mentor's reaction was eye-opening. He ...

Neuroplasticity, change your brain's function with fun activities.

Image
Hello and welcome to my first blog post for the month of April. I want to talk about a word that has completely transformed the way I think about mental health and wellness - neuroplasticity. It may sound like a mouthful, but the concept is actually quite simple. Neuroplasticity refers to the brain's ability to change and adapt, even as we age. This means that we can actively work to improve our brain function and resilience, simply by engaging in certain activities and habits. For me, the journey to discovering neuroplasticity started with a simple challenge from my accountability partner - to bungee jump in South Africa. Now, I know what you're thinking - how does bungee jumping have anything to do with mental health? Well, for me, it was a powerful lesson in facing my fears head-on and pushing myself outside of my comfort zone. As someone who has struggled with anxiety and fear for most of my life, taking that leap of faith (literally) was a transformative experience. In tha...

ANXIETY

UNDERSTANDING ANXIETY AND ITS SYMPTOMS   It was a sunny Sunday afternoon, and I was dressed in my best choir robes, ready to sing my heart out. I had rehearsed for hours with the choir, and I knew the song like the back of my hand. But when it was time to sing, something inside me just froze. My mind was consumed with intrusive thoughts and doubts, and I couldn't get a single word out. My heart sank as I realized I was experiencing a full-blown anxiety attack. I was paralyzed with fear and shame, thinking that everyone was judging me for my inability to perform. That's when my friend Amina Gowon (Chiwar) came to the rescue. She noticed that something was wrong and sprang into action. Without skipping a beat, she started singing the opening stanza of the song, and then she walked up to the stage to hold my hands. Her warmth and compassion were like a lifeline to me in that moment of darkness. With her support, I found the strength to keep singing, even though my voice was sha...

INTRODUCTION

Image
Hi, my name is Precious Obeahon, and I'm a mental health blogger who is passionate about speaking up about lived experiences related to mental health, including suicide and childhood trauma. I created this blog as a space to share my journey, offer support and resources, and bring awareness to mental health issues that are often stigmatized and overlooked. I know firsthand how difficult it can be to navigate mental health challenges, and how isolating it can feel. I struggled with depression and anxiety for years, and it wasn't until I began opening up to others and seeking support that I was able to make real progress in my healing journey. One of the most challenging aspects of mental health is dealing with childhood trauma. Childhood experiences can have a profound impact on our mental health as adults, and it's important that we give ourselves permission to address and work through these experiences. I believe that by sharing our stories, we can help break down the stig...
